Introduction
What’s good everybody?! Allow me to introduce a new series I’m doing every week! Where I recommend you guys some songs that I’ve been loving in the current week. These songs can be from any genre, released at any time (doesn’t have to be new). This is so I can show you all where my tastes are every week, and hopefully get some others listening to what I am usually late to the party to (since I usually start to love certain songs long after their release)!
This week I wanted to only focus on K-Pop, but in future weeks, I will go ahead and mix in every genre of music I listen to. I’ll also limit how many songs from a particular genre/artists I put into so it isn’t like 4 K-Pop songs and one random trap song.
Anyways, without further ado… LET’S GET INTO THIS.
Number 5. Algorhythm – ITZY
Happy belated birthday to Yeji! Anyways, this is one of those songs that you listen to for the first time/just released and they feel totally nostalgic. It just feels so nice, like I’m a child enjoying a half-day at school or something like that. It also has that distinct beat present in some early 2000’s music, especially Japanese tracks during that time (like Wii soundtracks too, haha) that make you just smile.
What gets me interested is the part at the end where the beats gets all electronic like a disco rave of some sort, shows that it’s still ITZY and anything can happen in their music. It then turns back, like a happy ending to a storybook. The only thing I would say about it is that it does kind of feel incomplete despite all this in my opinion. Most likely because of how relaxing it is compared to most other ITZY songs in spite of the brief disco dance session and super cute and energetic vocals.
Overall, a very sweet and cute song from ITZY to kick off our list. We continue to wish Lia a safe hiatus, and honestly it is kind of sad knowing her voice is missing on a track that would be perfect for her elegance. 8.5/10
Number 4. Midas Touch – Kiss of Life
Okay, this is the first example of me recommending songs that have been way past their initial release hype. So, you’ve probably already listened to this one multiple times and seen it in other blogs/shorts/other platforms. Well sorry, prepare to see this a lot HAHA.
This song legitimately feels like a 2nd/3rd gen K-Pop song, with the expected length of a modern day anything song (songs aren’t hitting 3 minutes anymore). Super upbeat with all the vocals in the right place. The only thing that is missing in my opinion (and this is honestly just optional) is a beat change to slow down the song. Like a slow, romantic bridge that sort of acts like a mid-skit song.
9/10
Number 3. Blue Heart – IVE
Everybody who’s read previous articles already knows I am an IVE Ult stan, so seeing IVE songs on these song rec articles will be nothing new.
I’ll make this quick since I did review it here. But a song co-written by Jang Wonyoung herself is bound to be one of the cutest things you could possibly gift your ears and your blue heart (pun intended).
The bridge towards the end and outro especially are just so cute, I want to buy every Minive plush and just try and hug them all with my short king body. The abrupt ending, makes it cuter too. Like when you get lost while checking-out somebody and your friend tells you to wake up (cartoon type beat. Sorry). 11/10. What did you expect from me?
Number 2. How Sweet – NewJeans
Definitely not as ground-breaking as tracks like Super Shy and OMG but this song is definitely a bop that makes any new listener’s day. It gives me the similar feelings that Algorhythm by ITZY gave me, albeit of course, replace the nostalgic Japanese/Korean sound with purely Korean sound.
I’m not super into the vocals as much as I am for other groups on this list, but they get the job done, the chorus especially is very soothing and definitely fits NewJeans. I would say the instrumental carries if not for the chorus, though I still feel there’s room for improvement on it. Also I wanna say that there should be more backing vocals as well.
Overall, this song feels very minimalistic, but sometimes simplicity is a beautiful thing. Believe me, especially you other college students out there. 8.3/10
Side note: Hanni with short-hair is perfect and the perfect example of something I didn’t ask for but completely needed.
Number 1: Supernova – Aespa
Y’all are probably upset that I’m doing the song that has already been known and released for over 2 weeks now instead of the new single Armageddon that was just released along with the new album, but hear me out!
I will be doing a separate review for the whole Armageddon album as soon as I can where I will include my thoughts on Armageddon. But I’m putting this song just because I’m already more familiar with it and clicked with it super-duper quickly. Funnily enough, the first time I listened to it was when I watching IVE do Accendio live on MusicCore (I think) and this was afterwards.
This song is really intense, besides the interesting music video that has fans laughing at the AI parts, this is one of those tracks that make you feel like their performing in front of you. The ‘ah oh-ayy’ as well as the actual chorus, are so catchy I bet even K-Pop haters would get it stuck in their heads. If I ever have my own video game, I would so have the instrumental as some boss music, it just has that intense vibe (and yes I would still rage if I lost with the music still playing). Heck, if I was a champion in a Pokémon rom hack or something, this wouldn’t be such a bad theme to ruin the player’s life to.
The song’s instrumental and slower paced verses make the song feel a lot longer than it actually is, especially with how the beat changes. But overall, if I’m at a rave and they take song requests, you best believe I’m requesting this. 9/10
